About our centre

The Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes offer what traditional tuition gives to your child and more. Kumon goes one step further by helping each child develop self-learning skills, enabling them to tackle challenging work without reliance on a teacher. Our aim is to help any child of any ability to progress and develop a curiosity and love for learning.

Your local Instructor will set work for your child at just the right level, enabling them to build confidence in their abilities and progress their maths and English skills in small, manageable steps through daily study. They will visit their local study centre up to twice a week for sessions with their Instructor. This allows the Instructor to tailor and adapt each child’s study plan to their abilities, through observing their progress and fluency at each level. Our study programmes are individualised to each child to help them establish strong learning foundations and a positive learning experience, to build skills and confidence for their future.

Mena Edgar

About your Instructor

My name is Mena Edgar and I have served as the Instructor at the Kumon Rathmines Study Centre since January 2013. Formerly an engineer, my passion for education and enthusiasm to help children develop a deeper understanding of the world around them lead me to change careers and open my own Kumon centre. I strongly believe that a good education makes a massive difference in one’s life, and I was drawn to Kumon because of the unique instruction method and the academic success I have seen Kumon students go onto achieve.

Since becoming an Instructor, I have enjoyed working closely with my students each week and have helped them to prosper and develop into confident, independent students. It’s a very rewarding experience and is why I enjoy being a Kumon Instructor so much.

I look forward to using my knowledge and experience to help develop your child’s education and, support them in becoming advanced, self-motivated learners who will go on to contribute to the global community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
