About our centre

The Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes enable children of any age and ability to develop key foundations for learning. Our unique study method focuses on enabling children to work independently, giving them confidence in their abilities. They progress through small steps to gradually develop ability and fluency before moving on to the next topic. Kumon study is not based on school curriculum or age, allowing children the flexibility to revisit and build skills where they need to and progress beyond school level where their ability allows. Unlike traditional tuition, Kumon study fosters students’ skill in self-learning, building confidence and lessening reliance on a teacher.

Your child will be assessed to enable their Instructor to set work at just the right level for them. Through daily worksheet study they develop ability and fluency. Your child will visit their local study centre for study sessions up to twice a week, where their Instructor will observe their learning growth and set work accordingly. Kumon’s aim is to develop each child into a confident, independent and enthusiastic learner.

Stephen Ussher

About your Instructor

My name is Stephen Ussher and I am the Instructor at the Lucan study centre.

Education is both my passion and my vocation. Having graduated from Dublin Institute of Technology with a maths degree, I then went on to complete a postgrad in public relations. After working for six years in the motor industry, I decided to pursue my lifelong ambition of working in education.

I joined Kumon in 2012 as the Area Manager for Ireland and Northern Ireland. During my three years in this role I garnered a very deep knowledge of the Kumon programmes having studied the maths and English worksheets in great depth. My daily interaction with Instructors and students enabled me to develop a true appreciation for what can be achieved through the Kumon programmes. I have witnessed first-hand thousands of Kumon students develop their confidence and academic skills through strategic, individualised instruction of the Kumon maths and English programmes.

My vastly experienced team and I are passionate about ensuring that every student that walks through the doors of our study centre is given the best opportunity possible to reach their potential. We aim for each student on every class day to leave the centre with more knowledge than when they walked in and achieve this through informed, strategic observations of their work as well as analysing how their homework has been completed.

We look forward to welcoming you into the centre as you begin your own Kumon journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
